Do you feel the need to justify your good habits

Courtney Ley

This week I want to touch on something that annoys me so much!

It has for a long time now, and this weekend spent in Sydney reminded me of this issue.

You should never feel the need to justify yourself to anyone. This goes for the people closest to you as well.

A lot of people tell me that I’m lucky to have Matt. I’m lucky that I have a husband that is in this industry with me. A husband who understands and does it with me. We eat well together and we exercise together.

Lucky – yes.

But it wasn’t always like this.

I decided to change my life around before I met Matt. Matt was my personal trainer when I met him, but we did not start to date until months later. I would see him 3 times a week for work outs and that’s it.

The rest of the time I was on my own. Living in a house where no one else was exercising or focusing on the types of food they were eating.

It was just not their goal.

It was not their focus.

And that was fine with me. I didn’t care if they did it too. I was so focused on what I was doing. I was so ready for a change, I didn’t care at all.

I would buy, prepare and cook my own food. I took over one of the shelves in the fridge. Everyone in my family, knew it was my shelf and they didn’t touch it.

My fridge now after a food prep session.

I would take my cooler bag full of my food to work with me. I would get comments from my bosses, when I would walk in everyday with me cooler bag. They were not being malicious – it was just different. I also didn’t think they thought it would last, so they would make jokes.

But it did. I brought that cooler bag to work every day. I would stop and eat more often then I usually would. That also took some time for them to get used to.

The point is that when I started I didn’t have Matt at home helping me, supporting me. I had to do it by myself. I had to stand my ground when, I sure there were a lot of people in my lift waiting for me to quit. I had to stand up and ignore the little comments. I had to make sure I did my food prep and cooking.

So I do know what it’s like.

I learnt every quickly there was no reason to justify myself to anyone. There was no reason for me to have to explain why I was exercising, why I was taking my cooler bag to work with me full of food I’d prepared.

This attitude is something I have continued to this day.

When I go away, like I did this weekend – I don’t give it a second thought. I don’t think about what I’m going to eat or what exercise I’m going to do. I take my runners and workout clothes with me, because 99 times out of 100 I will exercise while I’m away.

After a run though Hyde Park - Sydney

I have great meals and I have less than great meals while I’m away.

We were recommended this ice cream store - so we tried it out. WOW!!! So good.

I don’t justify what I eat or whether I exercise while I’m on holidays. Just like I don’t justify what I do when I’m at home either.

Exercise and balanced eating is now a way of life for me. It’s not a chore or a necessity.

It is no one’s business if you want to exercise while away. It’s no one’s business if you want to have multiple cheat meals while you’re away.

When you’ve decided to change your life. When it means more to you then anything. We need to train ourselves to not rely on justifying this to ourselves or to anyone in our lives.

What matters is that you live the best life for you. That you’re doing what you need to, to achieve your goals.

Never feel the need to justify good habits!!
